Fitting an entryway
Four checks before a console goes in a hallway.
- Door swing
- Open the front door fully and mark where it stops. Nothing goes inside that arc, whatever the wall length says.
- Walking width
- Leave at least two feet of clear passage past the piece. A console that narrows a hallway gets bruised shins for years.
- Height
- A console is usually set near waist height so keys and post land on it without bending. Heights are on every page.
- Free-standing or fixed
- Tall narrow pieces in a hallway are safer fixed to the wall. Where a maker supplies an anti-tip fitting, we say so.
